The Tatra National Park was established by a Government order of 30 October 1954 and formally initiated its activity on 1 January 1955.

159 people currently work for the Park; 99 of them are employed directly by the TPN, and 60 by the TPN Auxiliary Holding. The field services include the Park Guard and workers of the Park’s conservation districts (71 persons in total). They are supported by 20 specialists working on a daily basis in the TPN Head Office.

The Park is managed by the Director, selected by open competition and appointed by the Minister for the Environment for a five-year term. The Director represents the State Treasury in relations under civil law, concerning the management of the Park’s property. The Director executes the nature conservation plan and issues orders regulating the scientific, educational, tourist, leisure and sporting use of the Park area. The Director is also authorised under the Nature Conservation Act to issue administrative decisions concerning nature conservation within the Park. The Director also exercises the powers of the voivode (regional governor) in matters concerning nature conservation in the Park.

The National Park is a public entity financed from the State budget. As a budget entity, it cannot conduct business and raise profit. For this reason, the TPN Auxiliary Holding (GP TPN) was created as an entity receiving proceeds from entry fees, sale of timber etc. and covering most of the Park’s expenses under its ongoing activities.
